Election of Al Ghaferi to head the International Centre for Certification and Education of Addiction Professionals (ICCE)

In yet another achievement of the sons of the UAE on the world stage, His Excellency Dr Hamad Al Ghaferi, Director General of the National Rehabilitation Centre has been elected to head International Centre for Certification and Education of Addiction Professionals (ICCE), and thus becomes the first Arab to take this position.

Commenting on his election to this post, Dr Hamad Al Ghaferi, stated that it is by the grace of Allah that this achievement has been attained and then thanks to the ceaseless patronage the centre gets from our wise leadership. Dr Al Ghaferi added that he is “honoured by this post through which I will strive to be the best representative of the UAE in this international body. Amongst my priorities during my two-year headship mandate is to work on spreading prevention, treatment and rehabilitation specific training and education programmes locally, regionally and internationally”.

He insisted that his election came to emphasize the National Rehabilitation Centre’s   Emirati experience in building local capabilities in the field of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation from addiction disease which had the greatest impact in improving treatment and rehabilitation services. The NRC has, for a number of years, adopted the priorities of development, qualification and training of national capabilities and has considered these as preeminence in its strategic plans.

The NRC provides numerous accredited training programmes amongst which a Diploma in Psychology in collaboration with the UAE University where 45 specialists have graduated from this prgramme in the last couple of years.  There is also the accredited training programme, organized by the centre in collaboration with the Combo Plan, which is one of the internationally accredited programmes that target specialists working in the field of addiction disease. Furthermore, negotiations with the College of Nursing, University of Science and Technology, Jordan are on-going with the view of establishing collaboration with the centre to provide a practical diploma programme in addiction nursing which will be the first of its kind in the region.

On another note, the centre provides its strategic services regarding developing national capacity to the Ministry of Health of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Ministry of Health of Palestine in order to uphold mechanisms of training and qualifying specialized national capabilities in the field of treatment and rehabilitation from addiction.
