NRC Treatment Services

The National Rehabilitation Center realizes that opioid dependence or addiction to any other detrimental substance or behavior is an organic and emotional disease that can be cured if a strong will by the addict is combined with a specialized medical treatment. Therefore, it considers an addict’s decision to pursue treatment is a major step in his/her treatment journey.

A sole center specialized in addiction treatment across UAE, NRC is strongly committed to providing addicts with maximum understanding, care, medical and psychiatric treatment as well as confidentiality to rehabilitate and enable them reintegrate back into society, to be active persons in their community and to enjoy their normal lives.

Outpatient Clinic Services

Open from 08:00 to 15:00, the outpatient clinic takes care of patients whose health conditions are not so severe to be inpatients and it also provides post-treatment services to addicts who were inpatients. Once a new case is registered, the patient’s condition is evaluated and a treatment program along with a schedule is envisaged accordingly with total maintenance of privacy.

The medical team follows a treatment method called ‘The Way to Recovery’ or internationally known as ‘Matrix Model’ after being adapted to UAE cultural context. Over 16 consecutive weeks, the patient is treated and supervised by a medical team with integrated specialties. During the first weeks, the patient is treated to quit addiction and trained on skills to face the withdrawal or discontinuation syndromes that he/she may suffer from. Later, the patient undergoes some reinforcement sessions to avoid potential relapse. Both stages of treatment are carried out in accordance with the international best practices.

The success of the treatment program is partially dependent on family engagement. A family member is invited, after the patient’s permission, to take part in the program to provide an intimate social environment for the patient.

Inpatient Department Services

In addition to patients with severe health conditions, other patients are admitted to the hospital because they are thought, based on an initial evaluation, that they would get greater benefit than form the outpatient clinic.

During the first stage of treatment, a patient may need to stay in the Toxicity Elimination Unit for approximately two weeks based on the type of substances he/she used to take. In this stage, a patient may undergo withdrawal syndromes such as sleep disorder, depression, nervousness and a desire to take substances. Therefore, a patient is provided with the best treatment services to survive this tough stage. Other patients may require a very close medical monitoring in addition to certain medications to alleviate these syndromes and to prevent medical complications that may occur.

In the second stage of treatment, a patient is subject to an 8-week Relapse Prevention Plan which aims to train the patient on some skills and capabilities to enable him/her to survive addiction and avoid any potential setback. During this stage, a daily schedule is designed for each patient including individual and group therapy sessions, workouts and lessons in computer, English and painting. NRC management encourages all inpatients to take part in these activities which play an effective role in treatment and rehabilitation.

Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Services

Relevant studies and researches emphasize that teens require a holistic addiction treatment program, which depends foremost on having the patient convinced to seek treatment and to complete all treatment cycle. Teens need a special care because any failure in early treatment will result in greater difficulty in future treatment with fewer opportunities of absolute cure; besides, addiction during this critical age will negatively influence teens’ school achievements and social relations and may drive them to commit crimes to get enough money to buy drugs.

Therefore, teens’ treatment and rehabilitations are prioritized by NRC; a special unit was opened to meet the requirement specific to teenagers and a holistic program was designed. It begins first with a complete analysis to understand each patient’s health condition and most importantly the reasons behind his/her addiction. It is very important to identify the reason to design a treatment program accordingly otherwise a patient may suffer from drug abuse once again.

Family treatment program / family member engagement is a key pillar of teens’ addiction treatment and rehabilitation program; it contributes significantly to recovery rate and provides a positive environment protecting him/her from any relapse. To reinforce recovery, the program concentrates on developing some life skills such as decision-making, self-confidence and resistance to pressure exerted by friends or other individuals. Besides, it includes individual and group treatment sessions designed to enable teens to pass all treatment stages easily and smoothly.

Female-Based Treatment Services

Drug addiction in women was not paid sufficient heed due to lack of information and accurate statistics. Following the issue of law in amendment of NRC mandate, NRC 5-Year Strategic Plan entailed the opening of a special unit to treat addiction in women taking local culture into account.

A treatment program was designed to treat and rehabilitate female patients to reintegrate back into society and to acquire life skills and confidence to resume their lives. The program includes individual treatment sessions to understand a female patient’s reasons behind addiction and to design a treatment program accordingly. Family members are engaged to provide moral support to enable patients to survive addiction.

It’s worth mentioning that most of the medical team members are female professionals who were trained well on applying the latest treatment and rehab methods. In some cases, NRC cooperates with the concerned entities to solve in full privacy some legal and social issues that encounter a female addict.
