Heroin is a painkilling drug made from Morphine derived from
opium poppy.

It is white in colour when pure. Street heroin is brownish in colour and is usually mixed with adulterants such as barbiturates, glucose powder, chalk etc.
It is snorted, smoked (chasing the dragon, ie: heated in a foil and the fumes inhaled through a small tube or injected for a more powerful and immediate effect).

Effects
• Its effects are rapid (within minutes).
• Little doses give the user a sense of warmth and well being, it relieves pain and anxiety in the short term.
• Higher doses result in the user feeling drowsy and relaxed.
• Those using the drug for the first time often experience its side effects such as dizziness and vomiting, or even overdose which can lead to death.

Long Term Effects / Risks
Heroin is physically and psychologically addictive and tolerance builds very easily. Those who form a habit need the drug just to feel normal and withdrawal can be extremely hard and painful.

• Injecting can damage veins and lead to gangrene. Needle and syringe sharing puts users at risk of HIV and hepatitis.
• Overdose is common, it may lead to respiratory depression, unconsciousness, coma and in some cases death.

Withdrawal Symptoms
Like: stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, shivering, anxiety, increased lacrimation, sweating, diarrhoea.

The Law
It is illegal to possess or use heroin in the U.A.E. Those caught face lengthy jail sentences, followed by deportation.
