Solvents/Inhalants

Other Names:

Petrol, glue, carburetor cleaner, paints and thinners, nail polish remover, correction fluid, deodorants, lighter fluids and gas.

What is it?
Solvents are present in many household items and are used in our daily activities. They have no medicinal use.

Solvents are usually sniffed or breathed from a cloth, plastic bag or in some extreme cases squirted directly into the back of the throat.

Prevalence

Solvents are mostly abused by 13-18 year olds. However, older adults also abuse the drug.

Effects
You become drunk like you have ingested alcohol, dizziness, hallucinations, poor judgment, nausea and vomiting, lack of concentration, blackouts and even death.

Long Term Effects
• Tolerance can occur in people using glue (Toluene). Also psychological damage can occur.
• Long term use of solvents can also affect the brain, liver, kidneys.

Law
It is an offence under U.A.E. law to use inhalants. It can lead to severe jail sentences.
